Toyota’s X-Runner wasn’t the first sport truck to make an impression on pickup buyers, but it did so at a time when full-size trucks were ruled by big-horse V-10 powerplants and exotic looks. The X-Runner’s combination of a rear-wheel drive Toyota Tacoma and everything that we love about sports cars—lower double-wishbone suspension, a six-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, and a sexy hood scoop—proved to be a winner.
Inside, the X-Runner’s different vibe is conveyed by the fabric-trimmed bucket seats and monochromatic color scheme. In back, there’s a bench that provides good lumbar support, and in the bed is a molded-in cooler and a small platform for gear storage.
The X-Runner’s street cred came from a 236-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 and close-ratio six-speed manual. An optional TRD supercharger could boost output to 304 hp.
Aside from the lowered suspension, other chassis improvements included front and rear sway bars, which are not normally found on trucks. X-Runner owners could also upgrade the tires to 255-mm Bridgestone Potenzas, the widest offered on a Tacoma of that generation. The result was a capable truck that was easy to maneuver in town and fun on a twisty road.
